External Wall Insulation – South Essex Homes

South Essex Homes appointed Anglian Building Products to install external wall insulation to seven blocks of sheltered accommodation in Kingfisher and Sandpiper Close. The blocks were built in the 1970s using the Wimpey ‘No Fines’ solid wall construction method when insulation levels were not the highest priority.
Pull-out tests were conducted prior to insulation to ensure the walls were sound enough to accept mechanical fixings.
70mm Phenolic insulation boards were then applied, followed by two coats of base render, then a coloured top coat with a pebble dash finish.
Many of the residents of the 56 single bedroom dwellings were elderly or vulnerable so resident liaison and considerate working practices were critical.
After taking just three weeks to complete each terrace of eight flats, the upgrade reduced the U value of the properties from an estimated 2.4w/m2/k to 0.25w/m2/k. This clearly demonstrated that the new insulation not only transformed the existing façade of the building but provided a significant saving in heating costs.
The overall contract ran for a period of three months.
